and Dirty Discussions
to Have with Your Patients
Gena Tribble, PhD
and Donna Warren Morris, RDH, MEd
As dental professionals, we have knowledge of many topics we often tend to avoid discussing with our patients, when in actuality they could benefit from us doing so. This lecture will focus on new perspectives on some of these seldom-discussed (but often disgusting) topics. Evidence-based information will be presented on oral biofilm and its role in oral disease, as well as its relationship to halitosis/malodor, toothbrush contamination, social smoking trends and elder oral health and neglect. The discussions promise to be lively, interesting and useful to take back to work on Monday!
At the completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Discuss the basic biology of dental plaque biofilms
- Review examples of bacterial biofilm in disease
- Discuss current strategies for the prevention and treatment of toothbrush contamination
- Compare current strategies for the diagnosis and treatment of halitosis/malodor
- Evaluate several disgusting social trends such as use of hookahs, vapors and marijuana
- Become aware of issues relative to elder oral health and neglect.
